RTS — Radio Technology Somfy — is the 433 MHz wireless protocol behind most Somfy motorized shades, blinds and awnings. The motor needs power but no control wiring, which makes it the default for retrofits.

Understanding the Somfy RTS platform
What RTS is
RTS stands for Radio Technology Somfy. It is a one-way 433.420 MHz radio with a rolling code drawn from 16 million combinations, and it has been Somfy's residential wireless standard for two decades. An RTS motor needs power and nothing else. No control wire, no hub, no network.
That single fact explains why RTS still wins retrofits. Pulling a low-voltage control run through a finished wall costs more than the motor.
How many transmitters a motor will hold
Each RTS motor stores up to 12 transmitters. A handheld remote, a wall switch, a wind sensor and a hub can all address the same shade at once, and the motor obeys whichever one spoke last. Adding a control later means a programming sequence at the motor, not a rewire.
The one-way trade-off
Because RTS is one-way, nothing ever reports back. A remote cannot tell you a shade is at 40 percent, and a TaHoma hub cannot either, even though it will happily drive the motor. If a client wants real position feedback in an app, Zigbee is the platform that provides it.
Range is published at 656.2 ft open field. Through normal construction expect far less, and use an RTS repeater rather than hunting for a stronger transmitter.
What belongs on an RTS job
Motors across the Sonesse, Altus, Sunea, Maestria and Glydea families. Telis and Situo handhelds, DecoFlex and Smoove wall switches, Chronis timers, Eolis wind and Soliris sun sensors, plug-in receivers for motors that lack a radio, and the URTSI II interface for third-party control systems.
Mixing RTS and Zigbee in one house is fine. A TaHoma Switch speaks both, which is the usual answer when a decade of RTS shades meets a new run of Zigbee ones.

What does RTS mean on a Somfy motor?
RTS stands for Radio Technology Somfy, Somfy's one-way radio protocol. A remote sends the command and the motor acts on it. RTS is the most widely used Somfy protocol and the easiest to retrofit, because no wiring runs between the control and the motor.
Is RTS being replaced by Zigbee?
Somfy sells both. Zigbee 3.0 is the newer two-way protocol and reports status back to a hub, which RTS cannot do. RTS stays in production and is still the simpler choice for a single room or a straight replacement inside an existing RTS system.
Will any Somfy RTS remote work with any RTS motor?
Within RTS, remotes and motors pair freely, so a Telis, Situo or DecoFlex control can drive any RTS motor once programmed. What varies is channel count. Check the remote's channels against how many shades or groups you need to control separately.
Can I add RTS shades to a smart home system?
Yes, through a bridge such as a TaHoma hub or an RTS interface, which translates between RTS and app or automation control. Because RTS is one-way, the system will send commands reliably but will not report a shade's actual position back.
How do I tell whether my existing motor is RTS?
RTS motors carry RTS in the product name on the motor label, and RTS remotes have a small programming button on the back. If you are ordering a replacement, the SKU printed on the old motor is the surest guide to matching it.
