Somfy WireFree and Li-ion battery shade motors need no mains wiring at all — the motor carries a rechargeable cell and recharges in place from a plug-in charger, USB-C cable or solar panel.
The range covers Sonesse 28, 30 and 40 WireFree, the compact R24 and R28 roll-up motors, Cord Lift 25, Tilt 50 and Irismo drapery, in RTS or Zigbee.

What Somfy WireFree motors can and cannot do
No mains wiring at all
A WireFree motor carries its own rechargeable Li-ion cell and recharges in place from a plug-in charger, a USB-C cable or a solar panel. No electrician, no wall damage, no transformer. On a finished house that is usually the difference between a job that happens and one that does not.
The two ceilings that decide the job
The WireFree range tops out at 3 Nm, against 100 Nm on the wired side. That covers interior roller shades, blinds and light drapery, and it rules out awnings and rolling shutters outright.
WireFree motors are also rated IP 20, which means interior only. A protected porch still counts as outside. For anything exposed, the exterior range carries IP 44 sealing for a reason.
Battery power does not buy quiet
This surprises people. The quietest motors Somfy makes are wired: a Sonesse ULTRA 506A2 runs at 38 dB. A Sonesse 40 WireFree RTS runs at 49 dB. Quiet comes from the ULTRA gearbox rather than the power source, so a bedroom specification should look at the dB figure and ignore how the motor is powered.
Charger connectors changed, more than once
Somfy has shipped several charging generations. V1 and V2 Li-ion cables are different, and newer motors moved to USB-C with a magnetic adaptor. Order the charger named on the motor's own product page. A cable that physically fits is not proof it is the right one.
Recharge intervals vary by motor and by how often the shade runs. Somfy publishes around nine months on several references. Solar panels suit high or unreachable shades and remove the ladder trip entirely.

What is a Somfy WireFree motor?
WireFree motors run on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery inside the tube, so no mains wiring is needed. They suit retrofits, rented spaces and windows with no power nearby. You recharge them periodically with a Somfy charger instead of wiring them permanently.
How often do Somfy battery motors need charging?
It depends on shade size and how many cycles a day it runs. Somfy publishes a cycle count per charge for each motor, and the databook linked on every product page here gives the figure for that model. Heavier shades and more daily cycles shorten the interval.
Which charger do I need?
Chargers match the motor's connector and battery, and are not universal across the range. Somfy uses different plugs and magnetic adaptors depending on the motor. Check the databook on your motor's page, then pick the matching charger from Somfy Power, Battery and Chargers.
Can a WireFree motor be hardwired instead?
No. A WireFree motor is built around its internal battery and cannot be converted. If you want permanent power, choose a wired or DC motor from the start - that is a different motor in the range, not a change you make to this one.
Do battery motors come in both RTS and Zigbee?
Yes. The WireFree range spans both protocols, so you can match a battery motor to whichever system the property already runs. As with every Somfy motor, the protocol is fixed at manufacture and cannot be changed later.
