Choosing Somfy controls: start with the protocol
Controls only drive motors that speak the same language
Somfy runs four control platforms and they do not interoperate. RTS is one-way radio at 433.420 MHz. Zigbee 3.0 is two-way mesh radio at 2.450 GHz. RS485/SDN is a wired addressable bus. Dry contact is a plain switched circuit. A remote, keypad or hub built for one of these will not operate a motor built for another.

What sits in each category
Handhelds: Telis and Situo on RTS, Ysia on Zigbee. Wall controls: DecoFlex and Smoove wireless, dry-contact switch stations, DecoFlex SDN digital keypads. Hubs: the TaHoma Switch for RTS and Zigbee together, the TaHoma Beecon for RTS alone, the Data Hub V2 for SDN.
Sensors and interfaces round it out: Eolis wind, Soliris sun, Chronis timers, plug-in receivers, and the URTSI II for third-party control systems.
Receivers rescue a wired motor
A motor with no built-in radio can still take wireless control. An inline RTS or Zigbee receiver sits between the switch leg and the motor and adds the radio the motor lacks. That is the standard fix when a client wants app control on shades that were hardwired years ago.
Twelve transmitters per motor
Every Somfy radio motor stores up to 12 transmitters. A handheld, a wall switch, a wind sensor and a hub can all address one shade, and the motor follows whichever spoke last. Adding a control later is a programming sequence at the motor rather than a rewire, which is worth knowing before you over-specify on day one.

Common questions
What control do I need for my Somfy motor?
Match the protocol first. An RTS motor needs RTS controls, a Zigbee motor needs Zigbee controls, and neither will respond to the other. The protocol is stated in every product title and is fixed at manufacture, so it decides the whole control layer.
Remote, wall switch or hub?
A handheld remote suits a room you operate by hand. A wall switch gives a fixed, obvious control point that guests can find. A hub adds schedules, scenes, app and voice. Most installs use a wall switch plus a hub, with remotes where convenient.
How many controls can one motor learn?
A Somfy motor stores up to 12 transmitters, so a wall switch, several handheld remotes, a timer and a hub interface can all drive the same shade. Pairing a new one does not remove the others.
What is the MY position?
A favourite intermediate stop stored in the motor. Press MY and the shade travels to that exact point rather than fully open or closed, which is how most people actually use a shade. It is set once from the remote and works from every paired control.
Can I add app control to shades I already have?
Usually yes. If the motors are RTS, a TaHoma Beecon or TaHoma Switch brings them into the app without touching the shades. What it cannot add is position feedback, because RTS is one-way and the motor never reports back.
