Which Sonesse size fits your shade?
The number is the motor diameter, and it sets the tube
Sonesse 28, 30, 40 and 50 describe how thick the motor is, which decides the smallest tube it will drop into. A Sonesse 30 needs a minimum internal diameter of 1.13 in. A Sonesse 40 needs 1.46 in. A Sonesse 50 sits on the LT50 platform at 1.85 in.
Measure inside the tube, not across the outside. Wall thickness on an aluminum tube swallows more than people expect.
Then check the torque
A Sonesse 28 WireFree delivers 1.1 Nm at 20 rpm. A Sonesse 30 RTS delivers 2 Nm at 25 rpm. A Sonesse 40 RTS 404S2 delivers 4 Nm at 36 rpm. A Sonesse 506S2 delivers 6 Nm at 32 rpm, and the 510S2 in the same body delivers 10 Nm.
Fabric weight and drop drive this. A tall blackout roller in a commercial lobby needs the 50; a small bedroom shade does not.
ULTRA is the quiet version
ULTRA changes the gearbox, not the radio. A Sonesse ULTRA 506A2 runs at 38 dB against 45 dB for the standard 506S2, and trades a little speed for it at 24 rpm instead of 32. The ULTRA 504A8 DC comes in at 35 dB. In a bedroom or a conference room that difference is the whole specification.
Every size in every protocol
Each Sonesse size is offered in RTS, Zigbee 3.0, RS485/SDN, PoE and standard wired versions. The protocol does not change the mechanics: a 506S2 delivers 6 Nm at 32 rpm whether it is RTS, RS485 or four-wire. Choose the size for the tube and the torque, then choose the protocol for the building.
Head type varies across the range and cannot be guessed. Somfy publishes star, round and square heads on Sonesse motors, sometimes differing between two references of the same torque. Every listing states it.

Common questions
What is a Somfy Sonesse motor?
Sonesse is Somfy's quiet tubular motor range for interior roller shades, romans and blinds. The number in the name gives the diameter class - Sonesse 28, 30, 40 and 50 - which decides the smallest tube the motor will fit inside. ULTRA versions of the same motors run quieter still.
Which Sonesse size do I need?
Work through it in order: the torque the shade needs, the tube the motor has to fit inside, then the speed. Sonesse 28 and 30 suit small tubes and light shades, Sonesse 40 covers most mid-size roller shades, and Sonesse 50 handles wide or heavy fabric.
What is the difference between Sonesse and Sonesse ULTRA?
ULTRA is the quieter build of the same motor family. Standard Sonesse motors run around 44 to 45 dBA; ULTRA versions drop below 38 dBA. Choose ULTRA for bedrooms, boardrooms, hotel suites and anywhere the motor runs while people are sleeping or talking.
Can I change a Sonesse motor from RTS to Zigbee later?
No. The control protocol is fixed when the motor is built and cannot be changed afterwards. Decide between RTS, Zigbee, SDN and wired before you order. If you are retrofitting into an existing Somfy system, match whatever that system already speaks.
Do I need a crown and drive as well as the motor?
Yes, and they are chosen by tube profile rather than by motor, so they are listed separately under Somfy Motor Accessories. Every product page here links Somfy's own databook for that motor, which lists the adaptor set the tube requires.
