Somfy SDN Power Panel 1871026 for 10 Low-Voltage Motors

Short answer: The Somfy SDN power panel for current projects is the SDN PowerConnect Surface-Mount Panel (1871026). It takes 120V AC in, feeds 10 isolated 24V DC motor ports with power and RS485 data over one cable each, adds two isolated device ports for keypads or a Data Hub, and runs up to 240 ft to each motor.

Most searches for a Somfy power panel come from a commercial job with a row of low-voltage SDN shades and one question: what powers them and carries their data? Somfy answers it with the Somfy SDN PowerConnect Surface-Mount Panel (1871026), the panel Somfy lists as the replacement for all previous SDN motor power panels. One panel serves 10 motors. Larger jobs chain more panels on the SDN bus.

The job an SDN power panel does

Somfy Digital Network (SDN) motors need two things from the wall: 24V DC power and an RS485 data line. The PowerConnect panel delivers both on a single run per motor. An electrician lands 120V AC in the line-voltage side of the enclosure, and you home-run each motor cable to its own isolated port.

Isolation matters here. A shorted or miswired motor run stays on its own port, and Somfy builds in miswire protection and automatic segment termination so the rest of the bus keeps talking. Bus segment LEDs show power, activity and end of line. Each device port carries its own status LED: green for powered, yellow for no power, red for a power fault.

Somfy also positions the panel as a standalone answer for a small system. Ten motors plus two control devices, with no separate head-end, covers a conference room, a classroom wing or a single office floor zone.

Somfy rates the enclosure about 50% smaller by volume than the earlier SDN power panel, and knockouts on each side take conduit from 0.5 in up to 1.25 in.

Motors and devices it powers

Somfy lists two motors as compatible on the 1871026 page. The Somfy Sonesse 30 RS485 24V DC (1241144) fits small and mid-size roller shades on a 1.13 in minimum tube. The Somfy Sonesse ULTRA 504 A8 DC RS485 (1134022) handles larger shades at 4 Nm and runs at 35 dB, the quiet pick for boardrooms and lecture halls.

Each motor port carries five conductors. V+ and V- supply 24V DC, the + and - pair carries RS485 data, and G is the RS485 signal ground. Somfy's instructions also name 24V DC RTS tubular motors as compatible on the motor ports, wired on V+ and V- only. A Somfy Sonesse 30 RTS 24V DC (1241142) on a port lets one panel power a mixed room of SDN and radio-controlled shades.

The two device ports take SDN control devices. Somfy's spec sheet shows SDN keypads, the SDN RTS transmitter, the RTS Receiver for SDN V2 and DecoFlex controls among the products that connect there. Existing SDN V1 keypads plug in through an optional RJ45 adaptor, Somfy part 9029460.

Cable, distance, the bus and a Data Hub

Somfy requires its own SDN low-voltage motor power and data cable on the motor ports. For open ceilings and walls, use the Somfy SDN Low-Voltage Power and Data Cable, Non-Plenum, 1000 ft (9020126). Return-air plenums call for the plenum version, 9020127. Plan each motor within 240 ft of the panel and each device within 200 ft.

The panel powers its own device ports from internal supplies. Adding a Data Hub or another bus-powered device on the bus line changes that: Somfy calls for a separate bus power supply. The Somfy Bus and Sensor Station Power Supply (1822440) fills that role, and our bus power supply guide covers where it lands on the network.

Bus In and Bus Out terminals link panels in series. A job with 30 SDN motors takes three panels on one bus.

Integrators who want building control, AV or BMS access add the Somfy SDN Data Hub V2 (1870951). It gives five device ports and the network backbone for larger SDN systems, with the panel handling motor power. Our Data Hub V2 wiring guide walks through its ports and power.

For commissioning, the Somfy RS485 Setting Tool (9017142) sets motor limits and reads motor addresses at the shade. Laptop commissioning through Set pro runs on the USB to RS485 adapter instead. Before you leave the panel, the UP, STOP, DOWN and SEQ buttons on its face let you run each connected motor and confirm the wiring port by port.

Install notes an electrician will ask about

Somfy states that only a licensed electrician may connect incoming power and energize the circuit, following local and national electrical codes. Use AC service conductors rated 60 C minimum. The 0.28 in mounting holes sit on the back of the enclosure, so choose fasteners for the wall you mount to.

The panel ships with a standard cover and 10 female Weidmuller motor connectors. For a flush, finished look in a wall cavity, Somfy offers an oversized concealed cover, part 9800383. A rack-room install points to the sibling Somfy SDN PowerConnect Rack-Mount Panel (1871027). Check the motor's own install guide in our Somfy spec library for pinout and limit steps.

Ordering the panel and the parts around it

Count motors first. Ten or fewer on one floor fits a single SDN PowerConnect Surface-Mount Panel (1871026). Then size cable runs, pick plenum or non-plenum, and add a bus power supply if a Data Hub joins the bus. The full range of transformers and panels sits in our Somfy power supplies and distribution collection. For a non-networked 24V DC job with RTS motors, the 10-motor power distribution enclosure guide shows the simpler route.

FAQ

Does the Somfy SDN power panel need a separate bus power supply?

Not on its own. The PowerConnect panel powers its two device ports from internal supplies, so a 10-motor system with two keypads runs from the panel alone. Somfy calls for a separate bus power supply once you add a Data Hub or another bus-powered device on the bus line. The Bus and Sensor Station Power Supply (1822440) covers that.

How far can a motor sit from the PowerConnect panel?

Somfy rates each isolated motor port for up to 240 ft of combined power and data wiring, using Somfy's SDN low-voltage motor power and data cable. Device ports reach up to 200 ft. Plan longer runs around a second panel placed closer to the shades rather than stretching cable past those limits.

Can RTS motors run on the SDN PowerConnect panel?

Yes, for 24V DC RTS tubular motors. Somfy's installation instructions list SDN motors with integrated RS485 and RTS motors with integrated radio as compatible. RTS motors use only the V+ and V- power conductors, then take commands from an RTS remote or wall switch. A Sonesse 30 RTS 24V DC fits this setup.

What size is the Somfy SDN power panel?

Somfy's spec sheet lists the enclosure at 12 in wide by 12 in high by 4 in deep, in powder-coated steel, with a 12 x 12 in cover. It mounts on the wall or in the wall between studs, and the shipping weight is 12 lb. An oversized concealed cover, 9800383, gives a flush finish.
