Matching power to a Somfy motor
Start with the motor's voltage
Somfy shade motors run on 120V AC, 24V DC or 12V DC depending on the family, and the accessories do not cross. A 24V transformer will not run a 12V motor, and a 12V charger will not serve a 24V one. The voltage is printed on every product page here and on the motor label itself.
AC motors: cable and connector
120V motors take SJTW cable, sold with a moulded plug or as a fast-connector lead in several lengths. Fast Connector versions plug in without stripping wire, which matters on a ladder. Check whether the motor you bought includes its lead, because some Somfy references ship without one.
DC motors: transformers and distribution
A single 24V motor takes a plug-in transformer. Several motors on one run take a power distribution enclosure, stocked from 5 through 20 motors, which is the tidy answer for a bank of shades in a mechanical closet. SDN installations use 24V power panels sized to the bus.
WireFree: chargers, wands and solar
Battery motors recharge in place. Somfy has shipped several connector generations, and they are not compatible: V1 and V2 Li-ion cables differ, and newer motors moved to USB-C with a magnetic adaptor. Order the charger named on the motor's own page rather than the one that looks right.
Solar panels suit high or unreachable shades. Somfy publishes recharge intervals per motor, roughly nine months on the Irismo 45 for example, and a panel on a sunny elevation removes the ladder trip entirely.

How do I know which power supply my motor needs?
Read the voltage from the motor's listing. Somfy motors run at 120V AC, 24V DC or 12V DC depending on the family, and they are not interchangeable. Sonesse 30 and ULTRA DC motors take low-voltage supplies, while most 500 series motors plug into line voltage.
How often do WireFree batteries need charging?
Somfy publishes intervals in months for typical use, around nine months on a lightly loaded shade. A heavy blackout shade cycled several times a day lands well short of that. Sizing the motor below its ceiling keeps the interval close to the published figure.
Does the solar panel remove the need to recharge?
On a sunny elevation, effectively yes. The WireFree solar pack mounts low-profile against the glass and keeps a Li-ion motor or battery pack topped off continuously. On a north-facing window in winter it reduces the frequency rather than eliminating it.
Is the battery a warranty item?
No. Li-ion packs are consumables that lose capacity with age and cycle count, the same as any rechargeable battery. Replacement packs are stocked separately. The motor itself carries Somfy's 5 year warranty.
What is a fast connector pigtail?
A short cable that adapts a Somfy motor's plug-in connector to a standard NEMA plug or bare leads for hardwiring. It saves cutting the motor's own lead, which would void the warranty, and lets one motor suit either a receptacle or a junction box.
