The four parts in a Somfy roller shade motor kit

A motorized roller shade runs on four Somfy parts plus the shade itself. Each one has a separate job, and each one has to agree with the tube or the bracket it meets.

Power adds a fifth item on some motors. A WireFree motor needs a charger, and a 24V DC motor needs a power supply. The idle end of the tube comes from the shade system, outside the motor kit.

Choose the motor: battery, 24V DC or 120V AC

Start at the window. A window with no outlet nearby points to a WireFree motor with the lithium-ion battery built in. Low voltage wiring in a remodel opens up the 24V DC Sonesse 30. Large, heavy shades on line voltage move up to the Sonesse 50.

The Roll Up 28 WireFree RTS V2 is the entry point. Somfy rates it for mid-to-large interior shades, and it stores 12 RTS transmitters with a 656.2 ft open-field range. The Sonesse ULTRA 30 WireFree RTS doubles the torque to 2 Nm and drops the noise to 42 dB, the quietest motor in this table. The Sonesse 30 RTS 24V DC matches that torque at a faster 25 rpm and runs from a power supply with no charging trips.

Crown and drive sets for the roller tube

The crown and drive set is the part most often missed. Somfy sizes each set to a tube maker, profile and diameter, so two tubes of the same nominal size can need different sets. Measure the inside of the tube and note the maker before ordering.

For RollEase tubes, Somfy publishes two sets that share one motor list. The Somfy RollEase 1.5" Crown & Drive (9020674) fits the RollEase 1.5 in tube and sells for $7.00. The Somfy Crown & Drive for RollEase/ZMC 2" Profiled Tube (9021017) fits RollEase and ZMC 2 in profiled tube at $11.95. Somfy lists the same 18 motors for both sets, among them the Roll Up 28 WireFree RTS V2, the Sonesse ULTRA 30 WireFree RTS and the Sonesse 30 RTS 24V DC.

That shared list helps on mixed jobs. One motor reference can run a 1.5 in tube in a bedroom and a 2 in tube in the living room with a change of set.

Brackets and adaptor plates for the shade hardware

The motor head mounts to the bracket at one end of the shade. Somfy builds adaptor plates so its motors fit the bracket systems shade fabricators already use. The Somfy Motor Adaptor Plate for RollEase SkyLine & ZMC XL Series Brackets (9016378) mates 26 Somfy motors to those two bracket families. The list includes the Roll Up 28 WireFree RTS V2, the Sonesse ULTRA 30 WireFree RTS and the Sonesse 30 RTS 24V DC, and the plate sells for $4.84 in white.

Charger, power supply and remote

Somfy names the Somfy Lithium-ion Charger, V2 Head (9025166) as the charger for the Roll Up 28 WireFree RTS V2 and the Sonesse ULTRA 30 WireFree RTS. It sells for $33.95. Somfy also lists an 8 in extension charging cable for cassette shades and a WireFree Li-ion solar panel kit for the Roll Up 28 V2, which suit shades mounted out of reach.

The Sonesse 30 RTS 24V DC needs low voltage power. For one motor, Somfy lists the Somfy 24V DC 1.67 A Wall Mount Power Supply (1822209) at $52.87. Groups of 5, 10, 15 or 20 motors run from Somfy power distribution enclosure kits.

Each motor in this guide carries a built-in RTS receiver, so any Somfy RTS control drives it with no control wire. The Somfy Situo 1 RTS Pure remote (1870571) runs one shade or one group for $77.95.
